The little girl: Swapna.

Don't you just love the weather that compels you to grab your shoes and head out for a long walk? Yesterday was one such day; the sun, the trees, the breeze, everything was just calling out to me!

For the reasons stated above, I convinced my hungry, sleep-deprived body that I needed the walk from college more than the bus ride home. My body was not happy, nothing a walk and good music couldn't solve. 😉

Two songs later, I came across a few kids who were playing in the street. One of them was a little girl who had the cutest smile! So when she smiled, I obviously smiled back. I continued walking till I felt a tug on my bag. I slowed down my pace and looked around. I saw the little girl smiling. The only word she said that I could understand was "Chocolate?". I looked around for shops to buy this little girl a chocolate but found none. I told her I didn't have any chocolates with me and that I was sorry.

I resumed walking with my head asking me," Do you think you'd give her a chocolate? Would it be nice if I gave her money to buy a chocolate? Are there shops nearby? Am I willing to walk back to give her a chocolate? Forget it, you can't walk back, you're a lazy person!"

Moments after I decided to give up, I realized that there were shops a kilometer away and that if I wanted, I could actually give a chocolate to that girl! I dusted the thought off knowing I'd would never
willingly walk back a kilometer to give someone else a chocolate. And as I was thinking that, I found myself searching for shops that sell chocolates! I actually deviated from the almost straight path home to search for shops!

I finally found one, bought a few extra chocolates just in case, turned around and walked back to the location I had last seen the little girl. To myself I kept repeating," Knowing your luck, the girl wont be there! Well, more chocolates for me then! It's a win-win either way!" and then, I spent the remaining the walk convincing my selfish-self that those chocolates weren't for me.

I finally reach the location only to find my luck come true, i.e. the girl wasn't there! What a shock! :P

I didn't know what to do so I decided to stand in that area and look around like I had X-ray-vision! After a few moments of looking like an idiot, I approached a lady who was working in the construction site nearby. I asked her about the little girl. She said she didn't know but her son intervened and told me he could take me to her. More walking was included but I was determined to give these chocolates to the little girl.

We finally found her and I gave her chocolates. The smile she had was definitely worth the walk! I even gave a few chocolates to the boy who helped me find her!

I waved them goodbye and resumed my walk home. My tummy was rumbling by the end of all this. I was feeling stupid, hungry and happy!

My head was churning and I definitely had a lot of time to kill.

I wanted to share that moment, not because of the good thing I did but because, though we were always taught to look after ourselves first, if we look deeper, we might find some kindness towards others that we could decide to act upon! Also, I wouldn't count on me doing it on a regular basis.

So, no! I did not write so much to tell you how nice a person I am!

If you want to take something back, take this:

Strangers can be kind. You can be kind. Don't stop yourself from being kind because you are expecting something in return! Kindness is always paid forward.

This may resonate with another post of mine where a stranger throws me into a pool of mess when he asked me for money. (If you haven't read it, then here is the link: its-ok-to-make-mistakes-right )

The only difference between the two is that I wasn't a nice person then!

Hope you liked it! Thanks for the read 😊
